The program of this cd aims at proposing a walk off the beaten path: it wants to show, under the form of a “classical concert”, some meaningful tracks of that musical genre, known as “progressive rock”, that in the 70s came to the limelight with bands as Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes, Gentle Giant, Emerson – Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull .
Born from the common passionate interest of Bocini and Cavicchi in the music of Genesis, especially from 1970 to 1974, with Peter Gabriel as band leader, this project would like to offer a twofold possibility for the listener: for Genesis old fans to rediscover old tracks, born in a rock ambit, here reworked and at times transformed into a chamber music format; whereas those who haven’t had that kind of musical experience will be given the chance to be introduced to music of absolute value as to harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and timbre content.
The main features of these “two-voice reinventions” are at the same time the absolute faithfulness to the original musical spirit, the freedom of expression within the elaborations and the quite unusual way the contrabass is being dealt with; it is very often seen as a virtuoso soloist able not only to bear the weight of the original vocal parts but also to set up, together with the piano, dialogues, improvisations and variations.
The vocal insertions have been selected both for the “sound” of each word and for their evocative power; the main reference remains, however, the original lyrics of the pieces, which have as a rule remained intact, although at times appropriately reiterated.
These insertions have been created by Andrea Baggio, the project true “electronic voice”. He has recorded, filtered, disintegrated, amplified, transformed his own voice according to the effects we wanted to adapt to music.
The pieces chosen for this homage to Genesis have been taken from Selling England by the pound (“Firth of fifth”), Nursery Cryme (“For absent friends”, “Harlequin”, “Seven stones”, “Harold the barrel”, “The return of the giant Hogweed”) e The lamb lies down on Broadway ( a suite of 11 pieces).
All arrangements have been created by Alessandro Cavicchi.
