Larry Epstein, Bass
Acting Principal Bass of the SFS, he is the son and grandson of professional bassists. Born in Miami, Larry began bass lessons with his father at age twelve. By seventeen, he was playing in big bands and small combos at Miami Beach hotels, while also performing with his father in the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra. Larry attended the University of Miami's School of Music, studying bass with Dr. Lucas Drew. He also played with the school's jazz band. Three invaluable summers were spent at Tanglewood Music Festival. "Those were inspiring times. I'll never forget a performance of Bruckner Symphony No. 9 we did with Leonard Bernstein. He had us so psyched—it was an incredible experience to have at that age." After graduating from University of Miami, Larry played two seasons with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. This was followed by a season with L'Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, in France. While there he was also solo bass with Collegium Musicum de Strasbourg, a chamber group of twelve string players. Upon his return to the states, Larry joined with a pianist friend to play improvisational music for a year around the Boston area. Joining the Symphony in 1975, Larry was appointed associate principal bass six years later. Today, he is an active jazz musician in the Bay Area, often playing in local clubs after SFS concerts. He has recently formed a group called the San Francisco Symphony Jazzers, which includes SFS musicians Mark Inouye on trumpet and Raymond Froelich on drums. The group plays occasional gigs at various San Francisco clubs, and, as part of this season's SFS Chamber Music series, will perform Mark Inouye's composition Find the Cheese. An avid bicyclist, Larry spent part of his 1994 sabbatical biking 1200 miles in Europe.
